Sony to distribute MGM’s ‘Robocop’

Joel Kinnaman will star in remake of 1987 sci-fi pic.

Sony Pictures will distribute MGM’s remake of “RoboCop,” which will star Joel Kinnaman (AMC’s “The Killing”).

“Elite Squad” helmer Jose Padilha will direct from a script by Josh Zetumer.

Strike Entertainment partners Eric Newman and Marc Abraham are producing the pic, which is a remake of Paul Verhoeven’s 1987 sci-fier, which starred Peter Weller.

“RoboCop” will be an origin story, and production is skedded to start this summer.

Sony and MGM, which recently teamed on “Zookeeper” and “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo,” are also partners on “21 Jump Street” and the upcoming James Bond pic “Skyfall.”

Zetumer is repped by UTA, Management 360, and attorney Rob Szymanski.
