Paramount has preemptively picked up ARES, an action-adventure spec by Michael Starrbury. Mark Gordon will produce via his Mark Gordon Company banner.
Plot details are being kept sealed shut, but the title is said to be in the vein of Indiana Jones and Men in Black in what the studio hopes will start a franchise. (ARES is an acronym for Allied Recovery of the Extraordinary and Supernatural.)
The deal is said to be in the mid-six figures.
Drew Simon, who developed the spec with Starrbury over the course of a year, will oversee for the production banner along with Michele Wolkoff.
Gordon’s current feature slate includes, among others, Sony’s untitled Steve Jobs biopic that is being directed by Danny Boyle and is to star Michael Fassbender, as well as Arms and the Dudes, which Warners is lining up as Todd Phillips’ next film.
Starrbury wrote The Inevitable Defeat of Mister & Pete, the George Tillman Jr.-directed drama that premiered at Sundance in 2013 and was released by Lionsgate.
He also wrote an animated pilot titled Legends that is in post at Comedy Central and has The Great Unknown in development at New Line. Jorma Taccone is attached to direct that project, which is also bring produced by Gordon.
Starrbury is repped by CAA, Circle of Confusion and attorney Rob Szymanski.
